Pearlene live, Reuben & AJ, at Taste of Cincinnati, on the "For Western Violence and Brief Sensuality" tour

Now that the neo-garage craze has died down, is it time for a little neo-boogie? Cincinnati blooze band Pearlene resembles the hip-shaking sound of Exile On Main Street-era Rolling Stones and early Joe Cocker, though Pearlene plays darker and heavier, and covers nearly every song on its third album, For Western Violence And Brief Sensuality, in a thick, druggy haze. Epic workouts like "Watch The Way" and "High And Dangerous" take a low-to-the-ground approach, but the results are grandiose, as ominous organ and echoing guitars fill the room like a static charge. Pearlene strives to keep a vamp rolling as long as possible, and when it works up one as loose and raw as the album-opening "Hosannah," it feels like it could go for days.

Ohio Knife

Scalp or Be Scalped

We teamed up with Ohio Knife, Art Chantry & Aaron Draplin to slay this beast.

Working with Ohio Knife on their first full-length record, we pulled no punches in helping to define the packaging of this release. What is a better collaboration than working with one of the all time greats, Art Chantry, who, design the cover and back, while we aided in design and production. Not only did we get to work with Art, but enter the fantastic Aaron Draplin who offered up his skills and goods for Field Notes to take this release to the next level. The kicker to this whole project, we put it out on

About

Jason Snell and Brandon Hickle’s We Have Become Vikings had been a leader in Cincinnati’s design scene since 2009, focusing on digital design, motion graphics, and screen printing. In 2013, We Have Become Vikings Records was launched to include Jason and Brandon’s passion for the musical arts – and to put out their buddies’ records. WHBV Records’ first venture was a collaboration with Visionaries + Voices, the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, and the band No Age. Together, they issued a 4-song cassette tape with original artwork and produced a one-of-a-kind event at the CAC.
